Abrasives (Grit Raw Material)

The requirements to be met by the various abrasives are sometimes quite high, depending on the grinding task, regarding their hardness – not to be confused with bond hardness – toughness and chipping characteristics. These properties can be matched to the requirements as follows:

high hardness
high resistance to breakdown

sharp edges on chipping
good and "cool" machining

thermic resistance
no breakdown caused by high temperatures

chemical resistance
not sensitive to external influences

compressive strength
resistance to impact

brittleness
nature of readiness to chip
